Coaching and Trauma : Online and open to everyone: Cambridgeshire Network meeting

An Introduction to Trauma Aware Coaching – Looking out for our Survival Selves with Julia Vaughan Smith

Much is talked about at the moment regarding trauma and the impact of Covid-19.  However, trauma is often present in the coaching space and many coaches are unsure how to respond to some clients, particularly perhaps, those who disclose painful personal experiences or who are emotionally distressed.  In this session Julia will talk about what trauma aware coaching is and will introduce trauma, how it presents in the coaching space and how to respond within a coaching frame.  Being trauma aware helps us become more effective as coaches and enables us to feel confident in responding to what is presented to us. The aim is not to encourage us to be counsellors or therapists, but coaches who add value to the client.

She will draw on the Split in the Psyche Model developed by Professor Franz Ruppert.
Using this model, Julia will talk about these ‘parts’ and focus on how the survival self presents within us and our clients and how to stay in our healthy self.  The survival parts are defensive responses which are there for a purpose, to keep us psychologically safe, but get in the way of personal change, and therefore coaching. Within coaches, the commonest expression of this is the rescuer.

The intention is that there will be opportunities for you to ask whatever questions you have; Julia sees herself as a resource for you for the two hours you are together. Her aim is that you will leave the session with useful information, some practical ideas for coaching and with confidence around the concept or presentation of ‘trauma’.
