Supervision SIG - Trauma Informed Perspectives in Supervision - 17th September 2024

Join us on 17th September for our next Coaching Special Interest Group where we will have a panel discussion about how Trauma can impact our work as supervisors.  On the panel we are pleased to have three very experienced practitioners,

Ioannes Alexiades
Julia Vaughan-Smith
Julia Robinson
(See Bios Below)

They will share their different perspectives from their individual fields and in particular focus on Trauma from several  different angles;

• The supervisor
• The supervisee
• The client, bought to supervision by the Supervisee
• The organisation that the client works for

We will look at understanding and recognising entanglement (a symptom of trauma relating) and working with supervisees around boundaries and ethical considerations.

There will be time for questions and answers to the panel but if you would like to ensure your question is discussed please feel free to email it in advance to [email protected]

The Organisers

Mia O’Gorman – Supervision SIG Co-Chair

Mia ‘discovered’ coaching early in her career, sparking a passion of 20 years and counting. She holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Business & Executive Coaching, a Diploma in Coaching Supervision, and is accredited by EMCC as a Senior Practitioner coach.

Mia’s approach to practice integrates relational, behavioural and psychological dimensions, including emotional intelligence, Transactional Analysis and vertical development.

Mia’s career background in corporate HR in the automotive, finance and energy sectors led to consultancy roles in leadership assessment, leadership development and organization development. Now a freelance executive coach, supervisor and development consultant, she works with leaders, organisation coaching teams and independent coaches. Mia is a tutor and assessor for an ESQA-awarded Accredited Diploma in Coaching Supervision, and volunteers as an accreditation mentor and assessor for EMCC Global.

Mia sees supervision as a source of professional and personal support for coaches and mentors that is developmental, renewing and inspiring. During her supervisor training, she felt at odds with the benign authority figures often offered as metaphors for the supervisor’s role, such as the security guard, the teacher and the nurse. Instead, Mia prefers the metaphors of a personal trainer taking you through a workout, a physio who can ease the aches and pains of practice, and a chef offering a nourishing meal. Supervision can therefore be both challenging and renewing, like a day at a health spa to take care of your wellbeing and power up your performance!

Kevin Cowley – Supervision SIG Co-Chair

Kevin has been coaching both internally and externally for 15 years. During a career as a Senior Leader within the Civil Service, Kevin set up the original cross-government internal coaching provision and since 202 has been the Director of Kevin Cowley Coaching Ltd. Kevin holds an MA in Coaching & Mentoring from Oxford Brookes University and is also an NLP accredited coach. In addition, since 2015 Kevin has been supporting coaches as a Coach Supervisor, having undergone training with both Ashridge and Oxford Brookes University. Kevin is accredited as a Senior Practitioner coach within the EMCC, Accredited Coach Supervisor and also volunteers as an EMCC mentor supporting new and developing coaches.

Kevin sees supervision as a restorative process, a reflective space that has been specifically reserved for the coach to look at anything that is important to them, anything that might get in the way of being present and of service to their client. The coach can use the space to examine how they feel about coaching, about their client, the organisation in which they work, the various relationships and how they are intrinsically linked, but most importantly , they have a space where they can just be.
