Because of an ever-demanding work environment, organisations are focusing on front-line managers to deliver organisational goals and are training managers in coaching skills to support this requirement. ‘Manager as Coach’ is now a recognised phrase in many organisations.
This presentation from Dr Helen Smith offers an overview of the present challenges managers find in adopting a coaching style when leading teams. Having conducted thirty semi-structured interviews to capture the manager as coach experience, she shares the research and some of the findings. Helen identified some unique characteristics of manager as coach as part of this research. Helen will share some insights and resultant tools that evolved.

About the Presenter
Helen is a trained coach, facilitator, educator, and researcher and joined Manchester Metropolitan University in 2014. Helen’s doctoral thesis examined Manager as Coach: An Exploratory Study into the Experience of Managers Dealing with Team Challenge.Helen’s specialist areas of interest are Team Dynamics to facilitate maximum efficiency, Motivation for peak performance and Strategic Development to drive desired outcomes.
