In crisis, we saw teams, organisations, communities and nations pulling together. We witnessed a sudden abundance of compassion, creativity, generosity and innovation. But now, in so many places, the Covid honeymoon has come to an end.
The tension is rising. Some of that tension is new and some of it has always been with us. Compassion clashes with accountability and ‘commercial reality’. People feel judged for demanding or invading personal space. Since Covid began, leaders have been forced to make difficult, complex decisions with limited data in a world that could change in a week. In crisis mode, we forgave their mistakes and sudden changes in direction. Now the honeymoon is over, though, we’re expecting an awful lot better.
There’s plenty we need to do at the moment. What we’ll focus on here is what Richard Boston argues that leaders and teams need to be: authentic, responsible and courageous. None of these ARC qualities is new. What is new is to look at all three together and to attend to the tensions between them. It’s easy to be courageous, for instance, if we don’t also need to be responsible. It’s in resolving these tensions that many of the greatest breakthroughs are made.
In this session, we will:
• Examine the case for these qualities in the current climate
• Look at what ARC means for your clients, both now and in general
• Explore the ARC of the coach – including what it means to you to coach authentically, responsibly and courageously
• Share tools and techniques for coaching with ARC
• Practice using ARC to coach each other in real, current challenges of our own
The session builds on Richard Boston’s book ARC Leadership: From Surviving to Thriving in a Complex World. You won’t need to be familiar with the book to take full value from the session. If you are, though, you’ll have the chance to take your use of the book to a whole new level.
About Richard Boston
Richard Boston is a psychologist and coach specialising in leadership and team performance. He has spent the past 20 years working with a wide range of organisations all over the world, and writing books aimed at leaders, the people they lead and the people who coach them. He wrote ARC Leadership for leaders. However, its foundations were in the use of ARC in coaching. On one level, ARC is a simple and powerful tool. For Richard, it has become more than that. ‘Being as authentic, responsible and courageous as possible’ sums up not only his approach to coaching, but his approach to life in general.
